    I. OVERALL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT VIETNAM VISA FOR US CITIZENS

    1. Do you need a Vietnam VISA to enter Vietnam?

Yes, you do. According to the Vietnam Immigration Department, citizens of all countries in the world, including United States passport holders have to apply VISA to enter Vietnam. Without an appropriate VISA or pre-approval VISA on arrival, your entry request will be denied. The requirement for United States passport holders to issue a Vietnam VISA is their passport must have at least 2 blank pages and have at least 6 months of validity counted from your date of arrival to Vietnam. You can issue a Vietnam VISA for travel, trade, work, medical treatment, relative visit, or marriage. There is a limit of VISA validity, as you can only issue a Vietnam VISA with validity at least 30 days shorter than the validity of your passport or other international travel documents.

Vietnam VISA is issued within 3 working days counted from the day your valid and complete VISA application is received by the competent Vietnamese agencies abroad. An expired VISA can be subject to VISA extension at the competent Vietnamese VISA granting agencies. Holding an expired VISA can result in denying enter/exit Vietnam territory requests and many legal troubles. Furthermore, you can’t issue a different type of VISA from your current one if you are already in Vietnam. To apply a different type of VISA, you have to exit the country and issue a new one (except if you are in Phu Quoc Island).

There is no VISA-related restriction for United States citizens to enter nor exit Vietnam, but there are currency restrictions. In detail, anyone who carries more than VND 150,000,000 or US$ 5,000 or equivalent must do a customs declaration. You can find the official information about dual nationality and child abduction by the US government here as well as United States customs regulations

    2. Vietnam VISA exemption for United States citizens

In general, United States citizens are granted no VISA exemption for visiting Vietnam. Even though, there is a Vietnam VISA exemption for all nationalities to visit Phu Quoc Island. Since 2005, Phu Quoc Island has been classified as a Special Economic Zone and foreigners, including United States citizens, are eligible for a 30-day VISA exemption. Here are the criteria for United States passport holders to benefit Phu Quoc Island VISA exemption:

    • Your passport must not expire within 6 months counted from your date of arrival in Phu Quoc Island.
    • You have a ticket to leave Phu Quoc Island to an international destination within 30 days from the day you arrived, whether via a cruise ship or a flight (that means you don’t have to fly directly to Phu Quoc but transit through one of Vietnam International Airports provided that Phu Quoc is your final destination.)
    • You will leave Phu Quoc Island within 30 days and the onward destination is not within Vietnam territory.
    • You must not be on INTERPOL’s wanted person list nor haven’t been previously extradited from Vietnam

This exemption does not feature anywhere else within Vietnam territory as you will have to issue a Vietnam VISA to visit other destinations in Vietnam except Phu Quoc Island. If you have been in Phu Quoc Island and want to visit other destinations in Vietnam, these are what you have to do

    • Visit the Phu Quoc Immigration Office in Duong Dong and ask for assistance
    • Speak with your tour agent if they can arrange this. They will normally send your
    • Don’t try to apply for an E-VISA, as it is only available for people who are outside Vietnam.

    3. Types of Vietnam VISA for United State passport holders and their traits

There are 2 types of VISA that you can issue. One is the VISAs printed in your passport and the other is the separated VISAs which is attracted to the passport or alternative documents. From these 2 types, Vietnam VISA is categorized into different codes based on its purpose. You can choose whether your VISA offers single-entry or multiple-entry.

Vietnam VISA features for a single individual user only. The exception is applied for under-14-year-old children, as they share the passport with their parent or guardian

Special notice for travelers who want to travel from Vietnam to Laos by land is that you should request an adhesive Vietnam VISA from the beginning. Laotian immigrant officials require proof that you had departed in Vietnam and adhesive VISA is an undeniable one. Detachable VISA will be removed by Vietnamese immigrant officials upon departing Vietnam, leaving travelers with no proof of departure. It might result in you are forced to return to Vietnam.

    4. Which agency is authorized to provide Vietnam VISA for United State citizens

There are a lot of companies and agencies provide VISA issuing service, so many as you can’t even find the authorized governmental ones. We don’t know which is reliable, but according to the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States of America, the Embassy can’t confirm the reliability of the VISA services offered by companies on the Internet. Therefore, they strongly recommend you to use the online Vietnam VISA issuing link offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.

Otherwise, you can also apply your form directly to Vietnam Embassy in Washington DC, Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco, Consulate General of Vietnam in Houston and Consulate General of Vietnam in New York (and Vietnamese Economic and Culture Office in Taipei) or in another country which has diplomatic relation with Vietnam. Working directly with governmental agencies might be complex, but it is the most-trusted method that we can show you.

In case you want to extend your Vietnam VISA, you can issue your request at the Vietnam Consular Department in Hanoi and the Department of External Relations in Ho Chi Minh City. They are the authentic addresses offered by the Vietnamese government.

In the situation of your US passport is lost or stolen in Vietnam, you will need both replacement Vietnam VISA and replacement passport for arriving or leaving Vietnam. Contact the US Embassy or the Consulate General for assistance. They can usually issue a limited validity replacement passport within a couple of business days for emergency purposes. Your replacement Vietnam VISA will cost three to five working days as the requirement from the Vietnamese government.

II. APPLYING FOR VIETNAM VISA ON ARRIVAL

    1. Definition & usage of Vietnam VISA on arrival

Vietnam VISA on arrival is a new and convenient method to possess a Vietnam VISA. It allows you to get your VISA stamped upon arrival and pay VISA fee at the Vietnamese International Airport you have arrived. This pre-approval VISA will save you a lot of time by completing most of the entering/exit procedures before you arrive in Vietnam. Even though, it is applied only in some certain situations:

    • It is only applicable for people arriving in Vietnam by air
    • Visit a seriously ill family member or attend a relative’s funeral in Vietnam
    • Travel through many countries before arriving in Vietnam
    • Visit Vietnam on tours held by an international travel agency operated in Vietnam
    • You are a crewmember on a board vessel anchored in a Vietnamese seaport and you wish to exit Vietnam through another border gate
    • You visit Vietnam to engage an emergency response, disaster or epidemic control, search/ rescue activities, or other special purposes in the request of a competent authority in Vietnam

    2. The validity of Vietnam VISA on arrival

The default type of Vietnam VISA on arrival has 30 days of validity and features 1-time entry. If you visit Vietnam for traveling, it is possible to apply for a Vietnam VISA on arrival with up to 3 months of validity, 1-time entry or multiple-time entry. You can apply for the maximum validity which is specified for your VISA code as Vietnam VISA on arrival. In most cases, you can get your VISA extension as long as you have no problem with the past entry nor not overstay your VISA.

    3. Requirements and process to get a Vietnam VISA on arrival

Let’s be clear in one thing: You can’t apply for a Vietnam VISA on arrival on your own, at least, in most of the cases as you need a relative, a company or organization in Vietnam to guarantee your purpose of visiting. It can be a tourism company if you visit Vietnam as a tourist or the company/organization in Vietnam which hired or summoned you.

    a. What do you need to prepare

    • You have to fill an online form exactly and completely for personal information as required. It has to be the same with information in your passport. Your Vietnamese tourism company will provide the form.
    • 2 of your passport photos which were captured within the last 12 months, 4x6cm in size, straight face, shows both ears, no hat, no dark glass or tinted glass, not be edited anyhow, white or bright and not be decorated background (you should bring along 2 passport photos with 3x4cm in size too, just in case)
    • Your passport (the original one) with at least 6 months of validity counted from your date of arrival in Vietnam. You might need a scan of your passport in case the tourism company requires proof.
    • Approval letter upon arrival: do not forget it or you might be deported after 2 to 3 hours from the time you arrive at Vietnam international border. This letter is proof that your request for issuing Vietnam VISA on arrival was approved. You should print it in 2 copies and keep it with your flight ticket. You can also show it with your smartphone as your information was stored on the border gate’s server.
    • Entry and exit form: Print them out and fill them in advance will save you a lot of time. We have current Vietnam enter and exit forms here but you can ask your guaranteeing company to provide the newest version (if there is any change).
    • If you hire a company to guarantee your Vietnam VISA on arrival, you might need a scan of your passport (as we mentioned above), your round-trip flight ticket, your accommodation booking bill and maybe your detailed schedule in Vietnam as well.
    • It had cost us a half-day of research to find the genuine URL before we realized the online form we are talking about is provided by the third party. But at least we found the official form in which your information is filled and submitted to Vietnamese competent agencies. (Form NA2, page 7)

    b. The process to get Vietnam VISA stamped upon arrival

To be issued a Vietnam VISA on arrival, you first have to apply for a letter of approval for picking up a VISA at the border gate. This letter of approval is issued by one of those agencies Immigration Department (Ministry of Public Security), Department of External Relations in Ho Chi Minh City, and Vietnam Consular Department (you can find their contact information at the end of this article).

After 3 - 7 working days, you will receive the approval letter upon arrival via email (it can be reduced to 1 working day or less for urgent requests). You should double-check all of your personal information to ensure they are all correct. Any mistake might result in you are denied entry and forced to return. You should also ask your medium to provide entry and exit forms, print them out and fill them in advance. At last, but all of the required documents as we mentioned above in a package and make sure you won’t forget it at home.

When you arrive in one of Vietnam International Airports, head toward Vietnam Landing Visa Office at first. You will be required to show your passport, photos, letter and entry form. After paying the stamp fee to Vietnam Immigration officers, they will issue you the true VISA sticker on your passport which will allow you to get your VISA stamped at the passport checkpoint.

    4. Cost to get Vietnam VISA stamped upon arrival

Because we can’t verify the reliability of tourism companies on the internet, we won’t mention the service fee which you have to pay to the medium. Even though, you can find more detail about the Vietnam VISA fee at Everything you need to know about the Vietnam VISA fee. Please keep in mind that the stamping fee at Vietnamese airports is payable only in cash. That means you should prepare some cash at home as there is no ATM at the airport.

    5. Pros & cons of Vietnam VISA on arrival

The best thing is that you won’t have to go anywhere to get a Vietnam VISA. All you have to do is providing correct information, some photos, fill some form in advance and the rest of the work is handled by your agency. Your Letter of Approval will come to you after a week and then you can come to Vietnam anytime within your VISA’s validity. Vietnam VISA on arrival is currently the fastest and most convenient method so far.

On the other hand, VISA on approval is the thing that you can’t possess by yourself. It is required to have someone in Vietnam to guarantee your information as well as for purposes and staying duration. As a result, you will cost an additional amount of money for guaranteed services. The US Bureau of Consular Affair claims that they received many reports about United State passport holders were charged an unexpectedly high fee and some additional charges upon landing in Vietnam. Besides, sharing your personal information with a third party is potentially dangerous as they might use your information for illegal activities for example.

VISA on arrival is currently available at Vietnamese international airports only, so it means you can’t use your Vietnam VISA on arrival if you enter Vietnam through land border gates or harbors.

III. Pre-applying VISA at Vietnam Embassies (in person or by e-mail)

    1. Definition & usage of Pre-applying Vietnam VISA

It is the most traditional way of issuing a Vietnam VISA. You will submit your request personally to the embassy in Washington. You can issue any type of Vietnam VISA via this method (includes the first 3 categories if you can prove that you are eligible). Your VISA, if it is approved, will return to you via mail or you can get it personally.

    2. The validity of Pre-applying Vietnam VISA

You can issue any type of VISA which you need with its maximum validity. Travel VISA features up to 90 days consecutively of validity and business allow you to stay in Vietnam for 1 year.

    3. Requirements and process to get a Pre-applying Vietnam VISA

Prepare all of those documents and put them into 1 package when submitting it to Vietnam Embassy in the United States. It will cost you 3- 5 working days to possess a Vietnam VISA. Keep in mind that the Embassy reserves the right to request further information and documents from you as well as deny your request without explanations.

    • An application form of Vietnam VISA. You can fill the online form at the official website of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affair, double-check the information and print it out. Or you can ask for it at the embassy but it is not recommended.
    • Your passport (original or copy) in the eligible condition (we mentioned in the first part). Submit the original passport might result granted an adhesive VISA and the copy one result a loose-leaf VISA.
    • 1 passport photo which is 2x2 inches in size (fix the requirements we mentioned in the first part). If you issue a loose-leaf VISA, submit 2 photos.
    • Prepare the service fee when submitting it at the embassy. It can be cash, cashier’s check or certificated check payable to the Embassy of Vietnam in the United States.
    • If you prefer receiving your VISA by mail, you should prepare 1 prepaid self-addressed return envelope. According to the embassy, it is recommended to use certified mail service offered by FedEx, UPS or USPS. You can read more about it in the Vietnam Embassy in the United States official website.

    4. The cost to get Pre-applying Vietnam VISA

As you do all the process by your all, there is no further service fee than the VISA stamping fee. Even though, you should consider the cost of moving between places and mailing fees. Besides, it is recommended to make contact in advance with the Vietnam Embassy in the United States for updating requirements to avoid repeat visits.

    5. Pros & cons of Pre-applying Vietnam VISA

It is the best way of issuing VISA if you plan to stay in Vietnam for a long time. Receiving VISA via Vietnam Embassy means your information was verified carefully, allow you to easily do an extension. The downside is that you will have to submit your files by a person or via mail, makes it costs more time and effort

IV. THE INNOVATION OF APPLYING FOR VIETNAM VISA: EVISA

    1. Definition & usage of Vietnam EVISA

EVISA or electronic VISA is the most up-to-date method of issuing a Vietnam VISA. This method allows you to complete the process totally online and no guarantee from a third party required. In exchange, you are limited in the type of VISA, validity and extension ability. EVISA is accepted at certain border gates and also applied for citizens in some particular countries. But fortunately, the United States of America is one of them.

    2. The validity of Vietnam EVISA

As we mentioned above, Vietnam EVISA is limited at the issued type of VISA as well as its validity. In particular, you can only apply for a single-entry EVISA with the maximum validity of 30 days for business and travel purposes. Vietnam EVISA currently doesn’t support other purposes. An extension request is required if you want to stay in Vietnam longer

    3. Requirements and process to get a Vietnam EVISA

Unlike Vietnam VISA on arrival, you don’t have to prepare photos, entry forms, documents or cash to get through the Vietnamese border gate. There are many agencies that provide EVISA issuing service but it is better to do it yourself through the authentic application form for EVISA provided by Vietnam Immigration Department. After filling the online form, you are asked for electronic payment information. It costs US$ 25 (or VND 550,000) as the EVISA service fee. If your request is refused, the fee won’t be refunded.

You will receive a registration code to check the result. It costs at least 3 days of processing before the result is available. You can check your result in the Vietnam EVISA search menu by entering your registration code, registration email and your date of birth.

If your request is approved, please print it out. You have to show it to the immigrant official at an EVISA allowed Vietnamese border gate. There is no need for other documents or procedures.

    4. Cost to get Vietnam VISA stamped upon arrival

The payment method is required through electronic payment gateways like Visa or Mastercard. The service fee is prescribed as US$ 25 (or VND 550,000) on the official website of the Vietnam Immigration Department for applying EVISA. Even though, a double check by mailing to Vietnam Embassy in the United States is recommended.

    5. Pros & cons of Vietnam EVISA

It is the most up-to-date method of getting Vietnam VISA. EVISA issuing is fast, simple and secure. You don’t have to provide your personal information to any third-party agency nor don’t have to prepare any other documents and it only costs you 3 working days of the process. Besides, as the electronic payment method is applied directly to the Vietnamese government, you can avoid the additional service fee charged by the medium but still benefit the convenience.

In exchange, you can’t issue a VISA with a longer validity than 90 days and it is single-entry only. The extension process for EVISA is harder than the other, as it can only be conducted in Hanoi with an expensive price (about US$ 160 – US$ 200 or VND 3,520,000 – VND 4,400,000). EVISA is also allowed in certain border gates, which makes it somewhat inconvenient.

    V. VIETNAM VISA EXTENSION AND RENEWAL

Extending your Vietnam VISA allows you to have longer staying permission in Vietnam. This process has to be conducted while your Vietnam VISA is still valid and it usually costs you 5 – 7 working days. You need to submit your passport as well as required documents to the Departure of Immigration. What you need to prepare are:

    • Your valid original passport
    • Residence certificate issued by local public security
    • A 4x6 cm photo with white background
    • The NA5 form on page 11 sealed by your agency/company in Vietnam (click the link to see the PDF file)

    1. Vietnam VISA extension

Vietnam VISA extension refreshes your VISA’s validity, as the maximum extending time you can is your current VISA’s maximum validity with the same type of VISA. We currently can’t find the official gateway or genuine information about it, so this time you should find an agency to take care of it.

    2. Vietnam VISA renewal

You can issue a Vietnam VISA renewal if you want to extend your time staying in Vietnam by another type of VISA. You can get a 6 months validity from the 3 months current VISA. You can also change from single entry to multiple entries and vice versa. The cost of renewal is more expensive because you will issue a brand-new VISA.

Once again, you have to find an agency. We are sorry for that.

    3. VISA runs – Another way to extend Vietnam VISA

Besides the two above, you can extend your stay with some trick, and also with the help of an agency. All you need to do is secure an invitation letter from a reliable tourism agency and leave Vietnam to neighbor countries. After a couple of days, you use the invitation letter to return Vietnam through the allowed border gate. Otherwise, you can leave the country and issue a Vietnam VISA via a travel agency with which you made a deal before.
