    I. Overview of Vietnam weather through regions

    1. Far Northen Vietnam( Sapa, Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, Mai Chau, Bac Ha)

    This region has a temperate and subtropical climate which is cool throughout the year, with the average annual temperature of 15ºC. Far North Vietnam has two distinct seasons: Winter and Summer. The summer here is not as hot as the coastal region and the temperatures are around 13ºC - 15ºC (night), 20ºC - 25ºC (daytime). The winter is often and very cold, the temperature is sometimes below 0°C and there is even snowfall. From May to August, this region has a lot of rain. Average annual rainfall is 1,800mm - 2,200mm.

    2. Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Co To Island) 

    As a tropical area, Northern Vietnam is surrounded by abundant sunlight and high temperatures around the year. The average annual temperature is 23.6ºC, the highest one in June (29.8ºC), and the lowest one is in January (17.2ºC). Also, this area has high humidity and rainfall. The average humidity is 79% and the average annual rainfall is 1,800mm which means there are approximately 114 rainy days per year.

    The climate has two distinct seasons: hot and cold ones. From May to September is summertime, which is hot and rainy, with an average temperature of 29.2ºC. From November to March is in the winter, with dry weather, and the average temperature 15.2ºC. There are two transition periods between these two main seasons (April and October). So it can be said that Hanoi has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Four seasons have made Northern Vietnam have a rich, diverse climate with beautiful seasons.

    3. Central Vietnam (Danang, Hoi An, Hue, Dalat, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang) 

    This region is in the tropical monsoon climate, with high temperatures. The average annual temperature is about 25.6ºC, the highest is in June (29,2ºC), and the lowest is in February (21,2ºC). Particularly, in the Ba Na mountain at an altitude of nearly 1,500m, it has an average temperature of 17ºC to 20ºC all the year. The average annual humidity is 83.4%. The average annual rainfall is 1.355mm, the highest one is in October with 266mm, and the lowest one is in February with 7mm. 

    The climate of Central Vietnam is a transition between the climate of the North and the South, with a bit more tropical climate in the South. There are two distinct seasons each year: the dry season is from January to July and the rainy season lasts from August to December, with cold winters sometimes but does not last long.

    4. Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc, Con Dao Island, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne) 

    The climate in Southern Vietnam is equatorial, so the temperature is high and quite stable in the year. The average monthly hours of sunshine vary from 160 to 270 hours, the average air humidity is 79.5%. The average annual air temperature is 27.96° C, the highest one is in April (30.5°C), the lowest is in December (26°C). The average annual rainfall is 1934mm and there are about 159 rain days per year.

    The region has two distinct seasons: the rainy season from May to November. The rains usually occur in the late afternoon, heavy rain but fast, sometimes raining all day long. The dry season is from December to April next year. There's no winter here.

    II. Vietnam weather by months

    1. January

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    January is one of the driest months of the year in Hanoi and the North. At this time the climate will remain quite cool with the average temperature of 18°C. Sometimes it has light rain in January and there is foggy weather, especially in coastal areas and around Halong Bay. Also, if you plan to go trekking to the Northern mountain like Sapa and Ha Giang, make sure you bring enough coats to keep warm. The temperature in these places can drop to 0 and there is even snowfall.

    b. Central Vietnam

    This is the end of the rain season, so the weather in the center of Vietnam is no longer rainy and quite pleasant (average temperature: 23°C). In Hoi An, Danang and Nha Trang, the beaches are getting back with their majestic beauty. Dalat and the Central Highlands are quite dry and chilly, especially at night so extra clothes are recommended.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    This seems to be the best time to visit the South its best conditions of the year; blue skies and very little rain. The sunlight is also not to hash at this time, which makes the weather a bit cooler than any time of the year.

    2. February

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    The coldness begins to disappear and there is much warmer in the North while the hot weather is throughout most of the country. One thing to note when traveling to Vietnam in February is that during Lunar New Year’s time, many shops, museums, and restaurants are closed for about a week, which may affect your trip. Also, this is time for festivals all over the country, so some religious destinations like Yen Tu Mount or Perfume Pagoda will be full of the locals.

    b. Central Vietnam

    Summer returns to Central Vietnam with the beaches of Hoi An and Danang likely to be filled with sunshine and just only light rain sometimes, and the average temperature is 25°C. He is also warm while in Dalat and the Central Highlands the climate will be cooler  Further south the beaches of Nha Trang are also enjoying blue skies and higher temperatures.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    The South has good weather throughout February. The beaches and islands of Phan Thiet, Mui Ne, Phu Quoc Island, and Con Dao Island are having clear blue skies, a lot of sunshine and very little rain, with the average temperature, is 27°C. The temperatures are high but still very comfortable. February is a good month for scuba diving around in some islands, especially Con Dao Island, with clear waters and large visibility.

    3.March

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    There is plenty of sunshine and the temperatures begin to rise a little bit. Temperatures in the mountains are lower, which is a very good condition for trekking in Sapa, Mu Cang Chai, and Ha Giang.  Halong Bay is at its best this time and you can enjoy the quietness and calm waves here.

    b. Central Vietnam

    Hoi An and Danang in central Vietnam seem to have the earliest summer of all the country with constant sunshine and the average temperature is 28°C. Hue is also expected to be warm and dry and the climate in Dalat and the Central Highlands are excellent. Nha Trang is also enjoying the sunny climate, calm waves, and higher temperatures.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    Temperatures in Southern Vietnam are starting to rise considerably and the peak is until later in the month or early April. The weather is dry in some beaches near Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai - as well as the islands of Con Dao Island and Phu Quoc Island, are still the best choices in the country, with the average temperature of 29°C. Favorable conditions are still continual around the islands of Con Dao in March, with high visibility averaging 20-30 meters.

    4. April

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    The temperature in Northern Vietnam continues to rise as the region isare expecting hot summer months. Sometimes there will be a few rainy days at the end of the month, and the average temperature is 24°C. Hanoi is in a very favorable and pleasant climate with gentle wind and not too hash sunshine, which is a perfect time for you to explore this city. In the far northern mountains, the conditions are excellent for walking and exploring the regions of Ha Giang, Mu Cang Chai, and Sapa.

    b. Central Vietnam

    It is sunny and windy weather all the time in the center of Vietnam, and the beaches of Hoi An, Danang, and Nha Trang are at their best. The average temperature is 28 °C. At this time, Hue is also enjoying good weather, and so are the Central Highlands and in Dalat.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    It’s considerably hot in the South with an average temperature of 31°C and the chances of rain are increasing. Phu Quoc Island, Con Dao Island, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne still remain the best of Vietnam’s beach choices with clear skies and perfect weather.

    5. May

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    Temperatures are rising in the North along with more and more heavy rain. The average temperature at this time is 29 °C. In the mountainous area, May is a good month to explore Mu Cang Chai and Sapa; however, Ha Giang starts to have more rain. Halong Bay starts to have more visitors to come and relax in hot and sunny weather.

    b. Central Vietnam

    Central Vietnam also has hot and sunny weather, with an average temperature of 30 °C. Further Hue is also enjoying good weather, which is a good time for you to visit this citadel. To the west, in the Central Highlands and in Dalat, the rainfall starts to increase.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    In the South, the rain will increase, which helps to bring down the high temperatures. The average temperature at this time is 28°C. Also, short and heavy rain often falls in the afternoon, especially in Ho Chi Minh City, so remember to take an umbrella with you when walking down the street. Despite the strange downpour, favorable weather still continues around some islands like Con Dao, Phu Quoc in May.

    6. June - July

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam 

    Northern Vietnam is in the middle of summer in June and July so there is plenty of hot weather as well as rain and sometimes even storms, with an average temperature of 30 °C. The mountainous area is also very wet with heavy rain, therefore trekking is not recommended throughout the month.

    b. Central Vietnam

    Dry and sunny days continue in Central Vietnam in these two months. The beaches in Hoi An, Danang, and Nha Trang are at their best conditions, with an average temperature of 30°C; Hue is also enjoying good weather. In Central Highlands and Dalat, rainfall increases a lot more but travel is still possible.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    Southern Vietnam turns into its wet season in June and July. Although there will be a lot more rain than in the previous months, you can still expect a lot of dry and bright daylight hours. The average temperature is 28°C. What is special, June marks the start of Green Turtle nesting season in Con Dao Island.

    7. August

    a. Far Northern and Northern Vietnam

    The North remains summer weather which means you can expect a lot of hot weather, as well as rain and storms with the average temperature, is 30 °C. Halong Bay and Hanoi are having quite a lot of rain at this time of year. Actually, August is one of the wettest months of the year in Hanoi. The Far North is also very wet so trekking is inadvisable during the month.

    b. Central Vietnam

    Hoi An and Danang are still having good weather throughout the month. Temperatures are still high and rain is expected more frequently towards the end of the month. The average temperature is 30 °C. Nha Trang is in the best time of the weather. Hue is now experiencing higher rainfall and also, the Central Highlands is now very wet, which makes the adventure activities inadvisable.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    The south is now certainly into its wet season, rain is much heavier; however, you can still expect plenty of dry and bright days. The average temperature is 29°C. From mid-August, Green Turtle hatchlings and their first steps to the sea can be observed from the beaches on Con Dao Island.

    8. September

    a. Far Northen and Northen Vietnam

    North Vietnam is at the end of the summer but you can still have plenty of hot weather and some rain, with an average temperature of 28°C. The temperature starts to drop a little and rainfall becomes less frequent. In the far north, the weather in Sapa starts to improve, which makes trekking a perfect choice. Especially, late September is the harvest time in the mountainous area, and visiting Mu Cang Chai or Sapa is a perfect choice, as you can contemplate the region's endless rice fields turn a golden color, ready to harvest.

    b. Central Vietnam

    The weather in the center of the country is now going to turn into rain season September. During the month, rain increases fast in Hoi An and Hue. The temperatures drop a little and stormy weather is possible, especially at the end of the month. The average temperature here is 28°C. Nha Trang still remains a comfortable season although this city starts to see an increase in rain. Dalat and the Central Highlands are now very wet, which makes trekking and adventure activities unadvisable, and some of the Phong Nha caves may be off-limits due to flooding.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    The south is still in the wet season although rainfall is decreasing. Temperatures remain high and despite the frequent rain, you still have a lot of dry and bright days. The average temperature is 28°C. Phu Quoc Island, Con Dao Island can sometimes have unexpected rain, which makes the roads become muddy and ít’s quite hard and uncomfortable to travel.

    9. October

    a. Far Northern and Northern Vietnam

    October is in the autumn season in the North, rainfall and the temperature starts to drop, especially in the second half of the month as the cooler, dry winter is coming. The average temperature in this month is 26°C. Visiting Hanoi at this time, you can enjoy the comfortable weather, which is not cool and not too sunny. Halong Bay starts to welcome fewer tourists because the water is much colder. In the far north, the weather in Sapa and Ha Giang is dry and clear, which is the best weather for trekking. October is still a harvest time here so you can still visit Mu Cang Chai to enjoy the picturesque gold rice paddle here.

    b. Central Vietnam

    As in the rain season, rainfall in Central Vietnam is close to its peak and heavy storms can occur. Hoi Ai will have serious floods in October. The temperatures in Hoi An and Danang are higher and Hue is slightly lower with an average temperature of 24- 27°C. Further to the South, t Nha Trang will also have plenty of rain The heavy rains in Dalat and the Central Highlands start to stop, especially at the end of the month. However, weeks of heavy rain could make some of the Phong Nha caves are inaccessible and impossible to visit.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    October is at the end of the rainy season in the South with rainfall declining, especially at the end of the month when the region turns back to its dry, hot summer months, with the average temperature of 27 °C. The southern beaches of Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, and the islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao Island are starting to recover from the heavy rains and the sun starts to shine again, especially towards the end of the month.

    10. November & December

    a. Far Northern and Northern Vietnam

    By November the hot and sunny weather is no longer exists in the North and Hanoi is now having the best condition of the year. Temperatures remain moderate and there is very little rain. The average temperature at this time is 24°C. In the far north the weather in Mu Cang Chai, Sapa and Ha Giang is dry and clear, making it the best trekking time of the year. November and December are also considered to be two of the best months to experience a cruise on Halong Bay.

    b. Central Vietnam

    The rainfall in the center of the country is at its peak and heavy storms can occur. Hoi An continues to have flooded in November and less flood in December. The temperatures in Hoi An and Hue are quite different, with Hoi An and Danang being the hotter (the average temperature: 23- 25°C). Further, Nha Trang will be having lots of rain with nearly half of annual rainfall falling in November. In the Central Highlands and Dalat are different places with clear skies and little rain expected.

    c. Southern Vietnam

    November and December the South welcomes back the dry season with some of the best weather of the year, the skies are clear and there is a drop in humidity, the average temperature is 27°C. The beaches near Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai - are having blue skies and plenty of sunshine. The islands of Phu Quoc Island and Con Dao Island are also enjoying warm, dry weather at this time.

    III. In conclusion

    It’s quite difficult to say exactly when is the best time to visit Vietnam, as each region in the country has its own features each month. Hanoi is gorgeous during the autumn in September when the temperature has cooled down and better and in the warm spring from January to February. The northern mountainous area is at its best from November to the next year March. Halong Bay has its most perfect charm in almost every time of the year. Central Vietnam including Hoi An, Danang or Hue makes it best in the first months of the year, when the weather is favorable and doesn’t have rain. Or if you want to relax watch the sunset on the beach or explore hundreds of islands in the South, the period between December and April of the next year is your best time.
