Located 45 kilometers to the north of Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc National Park comprises more than half of Phu Quoc Island’s north area. Phu Quoc National Park spans over 314,000 m2 and is ringed with Ganh Dau, Bai Thom, Cua Dong, Cua Can and Ham Ninh Commune. Declared as UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2010, Phu Quoc National Parks features a vast amount of unique flora and fauna, evergreen forest, and dense mountain ranges.

Phu Quoc National Park is the home of 1,164 species of plants representing 137 families and 66 orders. People estimate that there are over 200 animal species including 28 species of mammals, 119 species of birds, 47 species of reptiles together with 14 species of amphibians. In addition to a relaxing moment when plunge into the cool stream, visiting Tranh Stream may give you a chance of observing a strange species of fish with the weight of 10 kilograms. This type of fish is so rare that even many locals don’t see such an odd fish for a long time. This fish has some dots likes those ones on the monk’s head and features a special floating tail. 1.      Visiting Phu Quoc Prison – The living evidence of the war crime

Located in the An Thoi Village, Phu Quoc Prison used to be the worst prison in the wartime. In the past, Phu Quoc Prison also is known as the Coconut Tree Prison covered an area of nearly 4,000,000 m2. With 400 detention rooms, this prison was where more than 32,000 political prisoners were detained and brutally, terribly tortured.  Nowadays, Phu Quoc Prison only retains a region of 1/20th of the original, but it’s still a living evidence of the bloody, dreadful crime of the war.

The first impression when visiting this prison is the barbed wire fence system. Between every two dangerous layers of razor wire is a corridor for guards and sniffer dogs to patrol 24/7. The prisoners were kept in dark, stuffy rooms which were 5 meters wide and 20 meters long. Besides, many prisoners were captured and punished in the Catso Tiger Cage made of barbed wire. Inside these cages, the prisoners had to suffer continuously brutal forms of punishment including pouring cold water on prisoners at night, pouring salt water into or lighting fire near tiger cages during hot days.

There are some torture tools presented in Phu Quoc Prison for you to witness how horrifying, inhumane the war was.  The warders invented more than 45 cruel torture methods to punish the prisoners such as chiseling teeth, striking with ray-skin whips, dropping the sack into boiling water blasting the pupil by radiating high-pressure lamp and burning the lower part of the abdomen. Every year, there are more than 10,000 people visiting Phu Quoc Prison. Many of them are young people, especially the foreigners coming here to learn more about the wartime and know how to appreciate the peaceful life we have now.

2.      Must-know tips for traveling to Phu Quoc

  • You need an international driver permit to drive motorbikes in Phu Quoc
  • Watch out for the big fishing nets that can be found right in the where the waves are breaking on the reef
  • In the rainy season, be careful when discovering Phu Quoc by motorbike or jeep. The red dirt roads may be slippery, muddy and even impassable
  • Please take the trash with you to protect the beaches which are being spoilt by litter.
  • The motor-taxi drivers sometimes push up the price for no reason. You should bargain for a reasonable price before sitting down on the pillion.
  • Since the end of 2007, motorcycle driver must wear a helmet when riding the motorbike. Therefore, don’t forget to request a helmet when renting a motorbike.
