    23. Visiting Phu Quoc Prison – The living evidence of the war crime

    Located in the An Thoi Village, Phu Quoc Prison used to be the worst prison in the wartime. In the past, Phu Quoc Prison also is known as the Coconut Tree Prison covered an area of nearly 4,000,000 m2. With 400 detention rooms, this prison was where more than 32,000 political prisoners were detained and brutally, terribly tortured.  Nowadays, Phu Quoc Prison only retains a region of 1/20th of the original, but it’s still living evidence of the bloody, dreadful crime of the war.

    The first impression when visiting this prison is the barbed wire fence system. Between every two dangerous layers of razor wire is a corridor for guards and sniffer dogs to patrol 24/7. The prisoners were kept in dark, stuffy rooms which were 5 meters wide and 20 meters long. Besides, many prisoners were captured and punished in the Catso Tiger Cage made of barbed wire. Inside these cages, the prisoners had to suffer continuously brutal forms of punishment including pouring cold water on prisoners at night, pouring saltwater into or lighting a fire near tiger cages during hot days.

    There are some torture tools presented in Phu Quoc Prison for you to witness how horrifying, inhumane the war was.  The warders invented more than 45 cruel torture methods to punish the prisoners such as chiseling teeth, striking with ray-skin whips, dropping the sack into boiling water blasting the pupil by radiating high-pressure lamp and burning the lower part of the abdomen. Every year, there are more than 10,000 people visiting Phu Quoc Prison.
