When the French Army attacked Vietnam, in the 1860s, Nguyen Trung Truc organized and bravely led his village militia forces to fight against French colonial forces in the Mekong Delta. In 1868, after his successful attack to the Frech fortress, the French took his mother hostage with the aims to capture Nguyen Trung Truc’s strongholds and regain the citadel. After that, the French captured and executed him on October 27, 1868.

    The local people built the Nguyen Trung Truc Temple in order to memorize and commemorate his significant contribution.     The legend tells that one time after being defeated by the Tay Son Army, the King Gia Long and his royal army fled here and ran out of both food and fresh water. They all get drought and exhausted. The Gia Long King wielded and thrust his sword into the land, then he faced upward and pleading to the God “If you’re pleased that I’m a King, please give us food and freshwater”. At that moment, he unsheathed the sword and from the leak outpouring abundant water.
