Bui Vien Street, also known as Western Street or International Intersection, is a street located on De Tham, Bui Vien, Pham Ngu Lao and Do Quang Dau Street in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Previously, this area was absent, so its trading was not very crowded. Since 2009, this area has become more crowded, attracting more leisure activities and smaller businesses. On July 15, 2017, Bui Vien Street was officially opened and the launching ceremony of Bui Vien Walking Street was held on August 20, 2010. This is the second walking street in Ho Chi Minh City that was opened after Nguyen Hue Walking Street.

1. The history of Bui Vien Street before 1975

In the previous century, the two prominent mafia big brothers of Saigon ( Ho Chi Minh City ) were Wong Cai and Ba The, dividing each other from an area stretching from Le Lai Street, Pham Ngu Lao Street to Dan Sinh Market nowadays. From 1950 to 1951, a large fire burned the entire slum at Bui Vien. Later, an investor rebuilt a building on the old ground.

The reason why this was the meeting place between the journalists and the reformed artists was that the area had a large theater at that time ( Nguyen Vao Hao Cinema). Pham Ngu Lao Street, the middle of De Tham Street and Do Quang Dau Street, was only a few hundred meters but having many printers. Also on this road, opposite Thai Binh Market was a number of newspapers and weekly newspapers. Most of them were around the area of the printers.
