About The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology - What is an ethnic group?

A group of people who share a common race, language, or culture is called an ethnic group (according to Britannica Encyclopedia). Within Vietnam, there are 54 different ethnic groups, each with their unique culture. Most of these ethnic minorities live in mountainous villages such as Sapa, making their cultural heritage somewhat a mystery to the majority of Vietnamese people.

The mission of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is not only to educate, or give insights into the 54 cultures but also to organize further research into the subject. Being based on such scientific background, the museum’s exhibition is famously informative and logical. This is, therefore, the most perfect place to start exploring Vietnamese culture!

Cultural heritage exhibition at the museum

With approximately 15,000 artifacts, all of which are accessible to visitors, Ethnic Museum certainly offers a lot of insights. The exhibition here expresses a variety of subjects, from tools and knick-knacks taken from the ethnic household to colorful artifacts representing holy ceremonies and superstitious practice. The addition of a library and theater, again, helps Ethnology Museum Hanoi tell stories of Vietnam’s ethnic minority culture. Their displays prove to be so authentic, that tourists always say they feel immersed in the culture. However, if such a day tour is not immersive enough, visitors can also have the chance to experience cultural heritage hands-on.

    Regular activities

Besides seasonal events, there are also regular activities available at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology at all times.

    • Making Dong Ho paintings: Tourists have the chance to try their hands at making unique paintings with traditional wooden stamps. Since the museum’s opening, this crafty activity has always been a visitors’ favorite!
    • Entering Ethnic Minority’s homes: One of the museum’s most successful “artifacts” are life-sized ethnic houses, recreated to look as if taken directly from a Sapa ethnic minority village! Visitors can enter and look around these buildings, taking themselves into a real cultural heritage.
