I. WHEN TO TRAVEL TO CAT TIEN NATIONAL PARK

As lying in the tropical monsoon climate, Cat Tien National Park has a really hot and wet atmosphere. The average temperature is 25.4oC, the highest is around 30.8oC and the lowest is 21.3oC. there are 2 separate seasons, which is dry season and rainy season. The rainy season begins from May to October with 2,894 mm of average rainfall. July, August and September are the heaviest-rain months. In contrast, the dry season begins from November to April. February and March are the driest months. The average humidity rate is 83.6%.

2. Best time to visit Cat Tien National Park

The best time to visit Cat Tien National Park in our opinion is in the dry season (or from December to May). During the dry season, the dirt roads on the forest are at its best condition, allow you to reach as most places in Cat Tien National Park as possible. It is also the Queen’s Crepe-myrtle Blossom season so you will have the chance to admire the gorgeous purple of the Queen’s Crepe-myrtle forest.

You can visit Cat Tien National Park anytime in the year, and of course, this place always has something for you. Just remember to update weather forecast regularly to avoid heavy rain or other unwanted weathers. Raining for a couple days might crush your trip.

II. HOW TO TRAVEL TO CAT TIEN NATIONAL PARK

1. Getting to Cat Tien National Park by shuttle bus

The best place to start your journey by this mean of transport in Ho Chi Minh City. Because there is no direct shuttle bus route from Hanoi to Cat Tien National Park. Even though, you can jump onto a Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh bus and ask the bus staff where you should leave the bus. The office of Cat Tien National Park is located at Tan Phu Commune, Dong Nai Province so we think it is better to leave the bus somewhere nearby.

From Ho Chi Minh City, you follow the 1A National Highway to Dau Day T-junction then turn left onto National Highway 20 (the route leads to Da Lat). After about 58 kilometers, turn left at Ta Lai Junction for 24 kilometers more then you are in Cat Tien National Park.

3. How to get around Cat Tien National Park

Cat Tien National Park is not the place for you to freely go around by yourself. Unless you knew all the ways in the area, it is necessary to participate in a tour held by the empowered organization. The national park is large with many difficult terrains makes it’s hard to find if you get lost. At the beginning of the dry season, the leaves of Queen’s crepe-myrtle chance from green into red, makes it a picturesque scenery in the legend. Your destination is Bau Sau (or the alligator swamp), located at the heart of Cat Tien National Park. Don’t be afraid, alligators in Bau Sau are not aggressive and won’t attack you as long as you don’t do something stupid. Alligators are more active in late afternoon and early morning, when the atmosphere is cooler, so sleepover will give you the chance to observe them better.

The safe place for resting in Bau Sau is the Rangers’ outpost. It is a high floor house as called “nhà sàn” in Vietnamese. The high-floor design keeps the house away from animals as well as keeps it dry on this wet lowland. Also because of this design, the number of tourist stay over is limited to 5. The accommodation is rustic with a number of cute cabins suitable for couples or families and some dorm style rooms

Your target destination is on the bank of Dong Nai River, Cat Tien Commune, Lam Dong Province. This place is the former capital of the ancient kingdom of Phu Nam. Their territory stretched from India, Myanmar, Indonesia, the southern of Vietnam to Cambodia, Thailand and China. Their Oc Eo civilization reached its prosperous from II century to VII century. This place was the sacred land of Brahmanism. The researchers found a lot of Linga – Yoni statue as well as gold pieces with sculpted gods, goddess, bull and turtle. There are also many idols of Ganesa, ShiVa and Bradma.

You will head toward the minority ethnic groups’ village of Ta Lai. This is the land of Ma and Stieng ethnic group. Right at the beginning, they have an exhibitor house to introduce the ancient relics of this land and the most prominent characteristics of the local. Go deeper into the village, you can visit the traditional weaving technique of Ma ethnic group with the totally natural colors from the special leaves. Sometimes, there are traditional performances held by the elders with interesting handmade instruments like Monkhala. IV. WHERE TO TRAVEL IN CAT TIEN NATIONAL PARK

1. Bau Sau – The kingdom of alligators in Cat Tien National Park

Bau Sau is the name of the crocodile lake located in the south of the park. It is the largest wetland in Cat Tien National Park with the maximum size is 2,500 hectares in the rainy season and it is only 100-150 hectares large in the dry season.

It is home to some of the regions most fascinating wildlife, including the Siamese crocodile. This species was hunted till local extinct but now they are increasing in numbers at this lake. Besides alligators, Bau Sau has a high concentration of plants and animals listed in the Red List of Vietnam and the world. The lake is also an important water source and grazing land for big mammals as samba deer and the highly endangered gaur.

You can choose whether come back on day or stay overnight. As we mentioned above, if you wish to stay overnight, you can see the animals at dusk and early morning, when they are most active. If not, the beautiful sceneries of the lake are still worthy to visit, as many birdwatchers walk the whole way to Bau Sau because this land has a large number of endemic birds

2. Bau Chim – The bird kingdom of Cat Tien National Park

From the Ecotourism center, you will have 20 minutes driving to the starting point of the tour. This tour is only about 1 kilometer long with a high tower so you will have a sweeping view over a large area around.

As the habitat of more than 350 species of birds, Cat Tien National Park is a unique location for birdwatchers to experience Vietnam’s’ abundant diversity of birdlife. Bar-bellied Pitta, Orange-necked partridge and Germain’s peacock pheasant are the most prominent species.

The tour guide is very experienced that they can lead you to the unique bird spotting location: the tropical evergreen, the deciduous forest or the bamboo forest.

Located on a fairy island which is just a short boat trip from the Ecotourism center, Dao Tien Endangered Primate Species Rescues Center is specialized in rescue, rehabilitation and release the endangered and critically endangered apes in the south of Vietnam. Most of the primates in this center are seized from the illegal wildlife trades.

Visiting this center will teach you many things about the hard condition of primate species, the work of saving and preparing for them a better life in the wild.

4. Ben Cu Rapid – The plant tour of Cat Tien National Park

The way to Ben Cu Rapid from the Ecotourism center is about 20 minutes walking. This is one of the most beautiful routes with many big tree, diverse plants and plenty of interesting animals. If you moving quietly and plus a little luck, you might see a lot of birds, colorful insects or even the large mammals like macaque monkeys, yellow-cheeked gibbons and black shanked langurs.

In the past, Ben Cu Rapid is the gathering place of food, medicine and necessities of Vietnam military during the war. This was also the first headquarter of Cat Tien National Park’s ranger in 1978

Go further from Ben Cu Rapid, there are several botanical trails near the bank of Dong Nai River. Heaven Rapid is an example with beautiful riverside scenery and dense wilderness.

5. Cat Tien Bear Rescue Center – The moon and sun of Cat Tien National Park

Why there are moon and sun of Cat Tien National Park in the Bear Rescue Center? Because in this center, they care for 2 beautiful bear species, which is the Asiatic Black Bear (also known as Moon Bear) and the smaller Malayan Sun Bear. Those creatures were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade or bile bear farms, where they had to live in terrible condition, poor diet, painful and life-threatening bile extraction processes.

Because of once living like that, they are now can’t survive in the wild. Therefore, this center was built to ensure they have a happy and enriched life with a good and healthy diet and a semi-wild environment.

Besides the bears, you may also meet other primates as they were the victim of illegal wildlife trade, too.
